Fragments of Humanity: Outsourcing Human Functions

The Story:

A collection of short funny, interesting or scary stories that revolve around the functions and malfunctions in the human relationship with AI (source: one of the essays I wrote on Human Outsourcing) due to the outsourcing of our human functions to technology which conflict with human moral, ethical, legal, medical and cultural borders in society in the pursuit of human happiness, satisfaction or the human quest for perfection which will be coming out on paperback in Nov 2025:

Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow: The Good Hearts List

The Story: when a man is diagnosed with terminal cancer, who has six months to live, he must reconcile his past with his own family and teenage daughter who is an Eco Warrior (environmental activist) because he made some covert deals that involved killing off endangered wildlife as well as polluting precious parts of the world. However, since she is a terminally ill teenager that wants to enlist the help of an AI program and him to deliver good deeds to a list of deserving people before her departure from life, the two must meet on the road of compromise with help from a sympathetic nurse and then travel across the country to check the sincerity or lack of it of those on her list and visit some memory landmarks of their own on the way which they commemorate with a memory song and keepsake from the past as they try to correct his environmental wrongs along their way. Since he risks losing her forgiveness forever because some of the damage done to fulfil his corporate and financial ambitions was off the Richter scale, he must devise potential solutions to right his own wrongs fast and get her on board to assist him with his attempts to make restitution and undo some of the damage that he has inflicted on the world. Unfortunately, however, his agenda suddenly puts him in direct conflict with his former corporate colleagues that he once made millions with who become his new enemies that he and his daughter must outsmart and outmanoeuvre in order to save an endangered species and a threatened green site that is under attack which he hopes will not only redeem him in his daughter's mind but also perhaps help him to edit, rewrite and save his legacy in the world's sight, people's minds and the world's history books. During their adventures as they come to terms with reality in different ways, there is one final gift that she wants to give to the world and her dad must help her to cast the deciding vote regarding the person on her list that most deserves her organ donation and good working heart as they both prepare to depart from life together on their own terms and in their own unique way as they create, repair and restore their family legacy, restore their relationship with each other and make their final life contributions to the world. The Evolution Outpost

At an outpost in the Amazon rainforest in the near future, a zoologist and his family guard, protect and preserve the last few animal species on earth but when his AI system picks up a species of human beings in the forest that move at lightning speeds and vanish into thin air that are hunter gatherers, his family start to experience some strange encounters, especially his young son who often looks after a pangolin, as they discover a tribe of time travellers who are refugees from the future fleeing a war that are an evolution of the human species that is largely untraceable to modern technology. Although the human species are far more advanced and yield technology far superior to their own, the tribe fled from the future due to a war with another evolutionary tribe who chose to evolve in a different way and who drove the other five tribes (human evolutionary species that chose to evolve in the other five ways) into hiding. However when the zoologist's son befriends a curious female child from the tribe, the secrets to the tribe's survival and existence come under threat and conflicts arise due to his outpost duties and goal of preservation as the family try to establish how the evolutionary process has changed mankind's genetic makeup and DNA, if those changes are friendly and whether they can co-exist peacefully. When the father clashes with the tribe then later his son becomes ill however, the young female tribe member maybe the only bridge to life that can save his son however, the zoologist has to agree to help her rewrite the future which entails destroying a certain technology in the present in order to save not only his son but also the human present and the human future. The Botanist Bot & the Frozen Nature Zoo

In the near future, deep under the earth, a solitary robot looks after an underworld full of animals and nature as well as a frozen zoo to protect species in the longer term, guarding nature's future from mankind who are their biggest threat and spends some time reconstructing species in an attempt to recreate the extinct. However, when a human child stows away then shows up in cargo supply cart (who wants to see an extinct animal species in person and so is seeking out the legendary underground nature world which may or may not exist according to general human society, who are now just a small group of human survivors that live in a dome with sky pod homes suspended from the dome above the planet's surface where nature no longer resides or exists or any humans just robots, due to the planet's surface being inhabitable), a choice must be made whether or not to return the human child to the surface and to the Sky Pod City Access point. The risks are great however, because to do so would involve leaving the underground nature reserve, the frozen zoo and any species regenerations unguarded for the journey which could be treacherous and the botanist bot has never made an independent decision before also the global warming from the planet's surface as well as the potential of flooding from rising water levels are starting to threaten the survival of the underground nature reserve and frozen zoo that the robot botanist maintains which could either thaw due to heatwaves and wildfires for flood and some species could then escape which might unleash dangerous natural threats upon the remainder of mankind which could in turn lead to mankind's own extinction but another revelation occurs when the human boy admits why he is there searching for his father who passed away whose dying wish was for his brain cells to be merged and incorporated into an animal's DNA so that he could live again, who may or may not be among the frozen zoo species that are being kept in the underground zoo.  Written by Jill Thrussell (Developed from Virtualization/Island of Wonders/Intellect: User Repair etc.)

The Orchid's Petals
In the near future death is eliminated and is banned worldwide as organs and limbs are replaced by synthetic parts but when a woman is about to lose the last fleshy parts of herself that remain, her eyes and brain which are represented by the final two petals on her real orchid, the last natural plant in existence that she grew, she has to reprogram an AI assistant and convince her great grandson to help her do the one thing that is forbidden, live her last moments to the full and see the wonders of the world for the last time with her own eyes then try to die with dignity.  Due to the strange hallucinations and brain surges that the new body parts create which worsen the more body parts are replaced, Helena is determined but eleven year old Triton, her great grandson who participates in some of her final requests, isn't sure that a mortal, natural death will provide her with the peace she seeks.  Written by Jill Thrussell  (Forever Trilogy, Corporate Death, The Artificial Heart of Me)

Tracking Death (working title)

When a family dies besides one member in what appears to be a tragic accident, a father's mind as he slips into a coma is uploaded into an artificial reality where he mentally embodies and assumes the identity an AI program assistant to track down some suspects and to solve the mystery of his family's murder.  Written by Jill Thrussell

The Time Vacation Loops

An AI program allows people to time travel via simulations either into their pasts to relive a moment of joy or for the purposes of self forgiveness (to reduce regret and guilt) or to time travel into simulations of history for a time vacation but when a fifteen year old accidentally becomes trapped in a Time Vacation Glitch Loop, two divorced parents must work together and solve a trail of memory clues about their son to get him back out which requires them to relearn about the son that they forgot about due to their divorce that they barely even know anymore to reach him on time before the program erases all the memory clues and they lose him forever. Risky Memories (working title)

In the near future a memory therapy clinic exists called Hopeful Futures organisation where clients are given the choice to remember, rewrite, relive, replace, reduce (through disattachment memory burying), or restore memories but every memory adjustment can add or subtract time from each client's life.  So when a woman wishes to relive some happy memories, restore some forgotten memories and rewrite some painful memories, she has to decide which memories are worth remembering, reliving or rewriting to live a painless, happier future and whether it is worth risking some years to maximise her potential happiness.  Written by Jill Thrussell

The Good Ratings

When three friends sign up for an AI program that evaluates, ranks and rates their lives, person, relationships, friendships, happiness and everything else based on their individual person as well as others opinions/ratings of their interactions with them (family, friends, lovers and work colleagues) the three friends are surprised to find themselves in the gutter when it comes to the AI assessment and human judgement as they score badly on both sides and less than two stars each in every section making them useless human beings and useless friends with useless lives.  During this period of self-discovery, they decide to try and improve their rank ratings by becoming better people via hiring themselves out to earn good or better star ratings to those who need emergency friends but as the commodity of friendship is tested, they start to realize how short they fall as human beings which drives them into hyper competition with each other to become better, happier, nicer people which then leads them to start testing out what exactly being a good person means, what having a good life feels like and to explore what real happiness really is.  (comedy/drama)  (sources:  Exported, book I wrote in 2010, piece I wrote in 2001/02 & 2004, Next of Kin original storylines, My Friend/Your Friend, Value Added Friends etc.)

Eruptions (working title)

When a young Eco Warrior predicts a global catastrophe that will wipe out a whole city using AI due to climate changes that cause a magnetic plate shift that reactivate a hidden dormant volcano under the surface of the earth (that only historians and some scientists know about due to a political coverup and the fact that the city shouldn't have been built in that location in the first place but due to the costs of relocation/rebuild that information was buried deep in city blueprints decades ago) and also trigger some large earthquakes on a fault line, no one believes her.  So, she has to enlist the help of a man that was once a revered scientist (geophysicist) but who dropped out of society and became a hermit to due to an inaccurate prediction and subsequent climatic disaster that he was supposed to help guard against but she also has to help him overcome his own nightmares from his past failures as together they have to find a way to evacuate a disbelieving city in time to avoid a mass human tragedy.   Written by Jill Thrussell (developed from Yesterday's Memories & Volcano of Truth Island of Wonders)  This story explores human development and the impact it can have on future generations when nature is ignored to advance human agendas.

Reflections of Forever

When a woman faces a terminal illness, she seeks out a high-tech solution and her family agree to participate in a field trial to see how useful AI can be through the grieving process and so on her departure from life, she transfers her mind into a robotic clone to act as a grief buffer to the reduce the painful impact upon her family, namely her husband and the two children that will remain and to provide some strands of comfort.   However, after her departure from life as the family start to go through some familial memories, the three start to realize that some of their favourite collective memories from shared experiences stored inside the AI robotic clone of their wife/mother are not quite the same as their own recollections which prompts them to test those past memories and follow a trail of memory clues to establish why there is a difference.  Rather intriguingly, once they discover the truth and that the new memory editions are how their mother wanted those past memories to be and not a precise recollection in order to honour their mother's memory, the children and their father start to revisit each memory and remake it but along the way, they must collect some clues and recall some details from their own memories of the past which will lead them to not just to the memory clues but also to her final wish.   Written by Jill Thrussell  (this story has been rewritten due to an abusive stalker) (genre: family drama, mystery, tech, sci-fi)

Memory Implant/Transplant Repairs
In a society where a solution to PTSD is sought through the rewriting, overwriting and replacement of traumatic memories, due to a traumatic history a woman, an elderly veteran and a young man (teens) volunteer to participate in an experimental AI program that will rewrite their most traumatic experiences in life and replace them with more comfortable memories.  However, when they discover that some memories truly are best remembered for what they were and are as well how their pasts interlink, they try to save their present from total memory loss via the replacement procedure and their newly discovered connections to each other before they lose those connections forever but as the memory procedure starts to overwrite their pasts, some other things start to go wrong. Signs of Life/Signs of the Heart: Donor Transplants Matcher (working title)

An AI system is created to find transplant matches for a busy hospital department but when the AI discovers a young man (mid teens), who didn't grow up with or know his family, with a unique condition, some of the rules of transplantation seems to clash and so an international search and virtual roadtrip via the boy's family tree is undertaken with the young man to find a suitable match from family members (known and unknown) that are spread out all over the world.  However, it's a race against time to find a suitable organ match and some of the candidates may have contradictory health conditions which render their organs unacceptable as they explore the possibility that perhaps a stranger's kindness may be worth more to his life than a unknown blood variable that is unable to assist, uninterested in his life and his plight to retain his own life.  When a potential organ match is finally found however, suddenly another complication arises because the young man encounters and befriends a young female patient that needs the organ just as much as he does which prompts him to oppose and question the AI that is supposed to save his life as he explores how complex life and death decisions and sacrifices can be when you're the one that has to make them.   Written by Jill Thrussell (developed from A Heartbeat of Hope for Tomorrow and title: One Can Be Saved)

The Great Minds Case

When a new depository is created to upload minds, thoughts and memories into in an attempt to preserve the past and protect human beings in the present from harm, a night watchman that guards the depository of minds, thoughts and memories, discovers a strange mystery when a memory experience user borrows a historical memory from the past to experience it that intertwines with the present and a mother and child that may need his help in the present due to some mysterious events from the past.  (Mystery) (Source: The Lost Hearts Depository, Library of Minds, System Life Support, Memory Retrievals, Intellect: User Repair, Mindplant and several others)  Written by Jill Thrussell

The Air Charge Codes/The Extinct (working titles)

In the near future air is in short supply much like human compassion both of which human beings need to survive and most people on the surface (surface dwellers) breathe a mock air dilute with minimal oxygen in it which makes it hard to breathe and the wealthy elite that inhabit Grand Air City which is dome city in the sky (sky dwellers) has better quality air which is purer with higher, concentrated oxygen content. Society and its relationship with air is symbolic of its relationship with factions of society and especially those that are not as wealthy and this metaphorical relationship reflects the reality of human relationships within this society and with each other. Animals no longer exist in their natural, physical form in Grand Air City and just a few remain that live below the surface in underground tunnels and caves because most have been made into synth creatures with robotic parts to entertain and service sky dweller human needs by a robotics corporation.

When a young girl with asthma is abandoned by her father, who sees her as a liability and lies to her mother about his abandonment to cover up his actions, runs out of inhalants, she seeks refuge in a derelict building where she is found by an air hacker that saves her life. In order to assist her, the air hacker (who is a time traveller from the future that has been sent to make sure she reaches her adulthood destiny to ensure that both humanity and nature survives and to avoid a looming extinction event on the horizon of the near future) then teaches her how to break the air access codes so that she can hack into the air system that provides air to Grand Air City to steal enough air to survive from the central pure air supply however, some sentinel robots guard the city and the air like gold dust, so any air code hacking attempts can be risky but there are some time travelling robots who trade air with the surface dwellers in exchange for samples of human tissue or organs. Since the sentinel robots' main duty is to preserve the elite, the wealthiest and those that are considered to be the strongest of the human species (human beings are treated like specimens which the robots utilise to study human primal instincts), every breath for the air hacker and young girl becomes a battle for survival and they must continually move around to avoid detection by the sentinel robots. Along their way, the two encounter some of the last remaining animals that are struggling to survive, so she convinces the air hacker to help her save and protect them before they are robotized but that requires more air because the animals are struggling to adapt to the diluted air that they now breathe because their natural evolutionary response is not fast enough to assist them, so the air hacker decides to try and capture a sky robot to help them keep a step ahead and to build an air generator. During his mission however, he encounters some synths that were once human beings that have been robotized to provide the wealthy sky dwellers with entertainment, one of whom is the young girl’s mother and so, she convinces the hacker to hack into and utilize the robots time loop manipulation program with some time hack codes to reverse time so that they can try to save her mother but the time loop initiation process is risky and could result in a time overlap that could cost them their lives. Written by Jill Thrussell

However, one day while on a usual air theft mission trips, the young girl meets a robot that appears to want to be human who wants to join them in their quest but since trust and loyalty are an issue, the air thief hacker challenges the robot to perform some perilous missions with him to prove the robot's loyalty to humankind during which time their small survival group starts to grow as they come across more creatures that need saving and the air thief hacker tries to teach the robot exactly what human compassion means, how to protect human life and what being human entails.  Written by Jill Thrussell (developed from Death Upgraded: Operation Death, Intellect: User Repair and Robotoland: The Kindness Code)

The Nature of AI

When a man's mother falls ill, he travels to the only location with an identifiable remedy (the amazon jungle/rain forest) with his AI assistant to see if he can find, make and manufacture a possible cure to her ailment.  However, while there he finds a native child that might possibly hold some natural answers to an actual cure and an ancient culture that may have figured out more than the AI which was programmed in a tech centre with all the latest technological advancements.  Written by Jill Thrussell (developed from Internalization & Heartland)

Heartbeats of Love Map: Fragments of Yesterday

When a woman (Rebecca) loses her fiance, he leaves a memory journal, a map (made from his memory files and audio messages via an AI program) for her with a list of seven people landmarks and locations that she must work out from the memory clues in his memory journal that he wants her to visit to enact his final wishes to assist her with the seven stages of grief via the collection of some of his belongings from the past, the visitation of some people from his life to say goodbye to them on his behalf and with each memory, person, location and the seven final wishes being a stepping stone to help her through the seven stages of grief.  On each stop and in each memory in the memory journal, there is some information that Rebecca must sift through and piece together to help her solve and understand his unexpected departure from life, his final wishes as well as something that she must do with the person she visits from his history with them, actions that she must take to reach the next person on the list to help her along her way, along with messages of comfort and encouragement from him and those from his past to help her through the grieving process (stages of grief).  Due to the nature of grief which visits, departs and then revisits in waves as the tides of love and grief wash over Rebecca's mind, body and heart and mingle with the heartbeats of sadness, love and loss, he assists her to have the courage to face life and the world once again as well as some songs at end of each memory visit that he has left for her to listen to along with a favourite memory of theirs to watch and remember to commemorate their life together.  Since the mystery of his premature departure from life has led to many questions, she participates with his last wishes and follows a trail of heartbeats of love and memory clues as she attempts to seek the answers that her heart requires, in the hope that his memory will be able to rest and live in peace inside her heart.  Written by Jill Thrussell (developed from I'll Meet You in Heaven)

Sparky & the Spark of Emotions

When a child loses contact with their parents while travelling on vacation in a foreign land, an family companion AI assistant called Sparky must help them not only to locate their parents but also become a temporary surrogate parent to the child as they embark upon their search which involves rendering and expression of human emotions as human challenges arise which the child has to first teach Sparky about, from family memories and past examples of family interactions, because Sparky's databases seem to lack interactive knowledge and only render theoretical examples.  Afterwards the child must then convince Sparky, who is attempting to replicate and mimic family and parental interactions that human emotions are helpful and useful manifestations of humanity and can perform a vital service to human beings through various challenges as they both attempt to find and reunite with child's lost parents as well as explore emotional feelings, memories, emotional expressions and the bonds of human familial love.  Written by Jill Thrussell (developed from Abstract and Substitutes)

Dissection of Love: The Love Epidemic

When love is identified by an AI system as a potential virus and new epidemic, due to a strain that evolves from extreme feelings and human emotions, a group of human subjects that claim to love each other and are felt to be high risk are inspected by an AI system as love is dissected under a microscope to define what love is and see if a cure can be found.  However, they have no desire to give up love and so they have to convince the AI that love really exists, that it can be a healthy state of existence for human beings, that it can be a wonderful thing to experience and that they also truly love each other through various challenges set by the AI program but emotional attachments and emotional states of being aren't always easy to fit into a set of codes and love or the positive effects of love aren't always easy to prove in a scientific form.  Sci-fi Romantic Comedy  Written by Jill Thrussell
