Mortal Functions & Immortal Dreams/Mortal Functions & Immortal Trades

Since Reingard is mortal and he lives in a world of mortal and immortal beings, he serves the immortal god like beings, most of whom have super human abilities to due to genetic engineering and some of whom, kill each other at will just for sport since they are reenergized and restored within twenty-four hours.  For as long as he can remember he has wanted to cross over from his current state of existence and become an immortal being but he has always lacked the capacity to do so being that mortals can only cross over if they earn the approval of an immortal which is extremely rare due to the genetic makeup of mortals or unless an immortal trades their immortality with them.

Some laws exist to protect mortals and so no immortal can take the life of a mortal being without loss of their immortality and punishment by death but generally, mortals and immortals do not mix, marry or socialise and the role of a mortal in the life of an immortal is purely functional and an act of service to their immortal masters.  However, due to an awkard unusual situation and an exceptional brave act of service, Reingard somehow ends up winning the approval of an immortal which means that he might stand a chance of making the cross over but as this unusual bond of friendship grows, it starts to stretch his own mortal boundaries and his own ethical ones which are then pushed to the limit as he attempts to keep up in life with his newly found immortal friend.

Since mortals must wear a mortal mark on their forehead that alerts immortals to their mortal status and identifies them, Reingard wears his 'mortal mark' every day but his newly found immortal friend encourages him to take it off in order to seem more immortal and to live the life that he reassures Reingard, is just a few mortal experiences away from Reingard's mortal reach because he might trade in his immortality any day and give it to him.  Although Reingard's life becomes slightly more interesting because he is now more acceptable to immortals, he is also then put in danger as the immortals around him start to treat him as if he is one of them as he starts to wonder if immortal life is as wonderful as he once thought it was because his immortal friend actually seems willing to trade his immortality away.  Another issue that Reingard must overcome is the derogatory terminology that immortals often use when they refer to mortal beings which presents him with issues because he finds it hard not to react when such terms are utilized and hard at times to mask his true identity.  Tension grows in Reingard's mind and heart as he tries to reconcile his old mortal status in life with this new god like existence that could be his that he definitely cannot live up to because unlike the immortals that he now mingles with, he cannot yet live forever and his once passionate desire to be immortal is becoming far less appealing with every day that goes by.  Written by Jill Thrussell (fantasy/drama/sci-fi)

Santa Claus's Elf

A helper to the great Santa that gives annually,
The one that brings joy every Christmas season traditionally,
Making toys and gifts that must be given away,
And delivered to waiting children along Santa's way.

Every year I work overtime during the Christmas season,
Because making the toys and gifts requires preparation,
And though I don't seem like much in the wheel cog of festive joy,
I sometimes see a smile of happiness when they unwrap one of my toys.

Once Christmas is over, I have a day of rest that is due,
And then I spend time with my elf family and Rudolph too,
So though I might not be the biggest great Christmas emblem,
I'm still an important part of creating a 'Merry Christmas' situation.

The Boy That Lives in the Well: My Wishful Bones

My bones rattle and shake,
But go nowhere,
Because I live in the bottom of a well,
But no one knows or tells.

Wet, damp, lonesome nights,
Small splashes of coins,
With no rescue in sight.

My bones creak and groan,
But don't go anywhere,
And the only thing that greets me,
Is the well's cold empty stare.

Wet, damp, lonesome nights,
Small splashes of coins,
With no days of sunlight.

My days were once full of wishes,
When I'd toss a coin into this well,
But that was before the day,
That I slipped and fell.

So now there's just wet, damp lonesome nights,
And small splashes of coins,
That sometimes give me a fright.

But my wishes still live inside,
My empty bones,
Even though I'll never ever,
Return to my home.

Wet, damp, lonesome nights,
My wishes and me,
Remain hidden from sight.

My wishes still live with me,
In this empty well,
And when a coin hits my bones,
I remember them well.

Wet, damp, lonesome nights,
But sometimes when I live in my wishes,
The day looks more bright.

So throw a wishful coin in,
For my empty wishful bones,
Because each wish that you make,
Could bring my wishful bones closer to home.
